Speech Therapy

The Wichita Ear Clinic works in conjunction with local speech pathologists, Via Christi and the school systems to provide individual aural rehabilitation / habilitation services to patients with hearing loss who wear cochlear implants or hearing aids. Aural rehabilitation services focus on assisting patients with hearing loss by helping them to improve listening and speech perception skills for improved communication and quality of life.

Referral and resources provided for Aural Habilitation and Speech/Language Services for Children

  • Comprehensive Speech and Language Evaluation.
  • Training in auditory perception skills to increase awareness of sound, discriminate between sounds, and learn the meaning of sounds.
  • Improving and developing speech skills for communication.
  • Developing language skills, including receptive and expressive language, for developmental expectations.
  • Managing communication needs which includes developing self-advocacy for communication in different listening situations.
  • Providing parent and family education regarding their child’s communication/auditory needs, teaching communication strategies, and advocating for early intervention services to maximize their child’s educational success.

Referral and resources provided for Aural Rehabilitation Services for Adults

  • Training in auditory and speech perception skills, particularly after cochlear implantation, to assist the brain in adapting to a different quality of sound.
  • Teaching listening techniques or compensatory strategies to increase comprehension of conversations with family, friends, and coworkers, thus providing patients with more opportunities to engage and improve quality of life.
  • Counseling and support for both patient and family during the rehabilitation and cochlear implant programming process.
