On this day in 1978, Rod Saunders, the first person to have his hearing restored and understand speech with the aid of a multi-channel cochlear implant, first heard with his cochlear implant. The groundbreaking research was done by Professor Graeme Clark, who said when this accomplishment was achieved, “I burst into tears of joy.”
